A picturesque tiny medieval village in the south of Italy  in the Cilento National Park

It is about two hours and a half drive from Neaples and it has a very efficient train station that connects Pisciotta to the most important cities in Italy.

Pisciotta is an old village of unknown origins: some say it dates back to the Greeks,  some to the Romans and some others think it is more recent.

It was already a well known village at about 1000, later it became one of the most important centres for commercial and administration matters.

In the Middle Ages a castle was built and a real prince lived in it.

As you know, there was a singular law in that period:  the "Ius Primae Noctis";  the prince had the right to sleep with a bride the first night of her marriage, otherwise her groom was sent to prison. This medieval law caused a lot of problems to the prince...

As centuries went by many invaders tried to conquer Pisciotta, but thanks to its position on the top of a hill, and to a system of coastal towers, the people managed to save the town.

Today Pisciotta, and together with two other small villages, Rodio and Caprioli, has 3020 inhabitants. In the past a lot more people lived here, but in the past recent years young people have preferred to look for a job in big cities.

All this had a certain positive outcome because the town architecture and the habits have not changed so much.

Tourism is the main resource, and it lasts from the spring to the autumn.

Do you know that we have a special oil?

The olive trees are known in botany with the name of: Ulivo Pisciottano, these olives produce a special oil which has flavour, transparent color, delicious flavor and special medical qualities. It is one of the tastiest oils in Italy

Most of the olive trees are 3 or 4 centuries old and they are considered national monuments, some have trunks up to 8 meters wide and some times the trunks are hallow in the middle so in the old times they were used either to hide from the brigands.

If you visit Pisciotta you will find a gorgeous panorama, friendly people, exceptional food, a quiet, clean and peaceful beach , a port with all facilities, fishermen that will teach you to fish like in the old ages.
